In this post we will discuss one of the most environmentally friendly construction concepts, green roofs.
The benefits of green roofs are so many that it is difficult to understand current policies being inadequate to support (or even mandate) this system, including in developed countries – of course there are incentives or certain programs that support this but in our opinion this is inadequate even in developed countries, not to mention the rest of the world. When you read the list below you might also agree. So let’s start listing the benefits. We plan to cover the construction of green roofs in another post.
Benefits of Green Roofs:
Green roofs greatly reduce the stormflow burden on stormwater system by absorbing and holding a significant amount of water during rainfalls
Heat island effect is greatly reduced during hot summer days. A city with a lot of green roofs will be cooler during summer. According to epa.gov website, green roof temperatures can be 30–40°F (about 17 to 22 degrees Celcius) lower than those of conventional roofs and can reduce city-wide ambient temperatures by up to 5°F (2.8°C).
Provide a green area to enjoy for building residents
Fruits or vegetables may be grown although to a limited extent
Contribute to wildlife and biodiversity habitat by supporting bees, insects and birds
Enables energy savings by providing insulation that works to keep insude warm during winter and cool during summer
Will make cities and buildings appear aesthetically more appealing
Will decrease air pollution
Built right, green roofs increase lifespan of roof significantly
